AR Filters
Face filters are used for quick fun and beautifying effects. Looking at how social media impacts society, could we attribute more to face filters? Why has adding a digital layer onto ourselves become so popular?
2019: Who wore it best is a visual novel, a social media summary of the year 2019. The story is told through face filters and its protagonists are you - the audience. Each of the three filters is about one of the current hot topics of social media in 2019.
Chapter I - iCon$ume Clothing sales have increased by 60% since the birth of social media. Digital marketers think of high engaging posts with fashion brands and influencers, while the platforms facilitate tailored ads and integrate shopping experience. The unwritten rule of influencers is that they should not be seen in the same clothes twice. "I consume, therefore I exist" is the new mantra.
Chapter II - Narcisƨist Tapping on the egocentric need to express and impress, face filters are providing even more excuse to take another selfie and obsess with self-image. Like the Narciss who once fell into the lake obsessed with his image, social media users fall in love with every new selfie. Whether posting a selfie or preaching, the ego is always in the spotlight on social media.
Chapter III - How dare you? Last of the three chapters is about activism on social media. In 2019 we’ve seen many talks and creative calls to action to raise awareness of global warming. Consumers are more educated than ever and buying from brands that are green has become a determining factor to many. The knowledge that has spread through social media and ambassadors such as Greta Thunberg are urging brands to find strategies that are environmentally-friendly. Last filter is called How Dare You? by the fierce speech that Greta gave towards the end of 2019.
